The National Honor Society was established in 1921 by the National Associations of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Through the leadership of Dr. Edward Rynearson, who was the principal of the Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, led the society from its original Alpha Chapter to over 1,000 by 1930.

The National Honor Society was established simply to convey four main purposes: to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote leadership; and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.

The motto of the NHS is the French phrase Noblesse Oblige, literally meaning nobility obligates. In laments terms, it means that those of high rank have the obligation to behave honorably, generously, and responsibly to others.
